Hey fellow kickers: I thought I'd give a more complete update on the '79 in this new area (thanks G!). Just got in, and installed LSL rearsets from VD-Classics (they were nice enough to send the seat brackets they didn't send with my seat). These are nice, and fit like a glove. Had to order up the stock 1980 SR brake armature, return spring and rod, which should finally complete my rear brake system. Changed out the Progressive shocks (put those on my '78), to these 13" Ohlins. Won them relatively cheaply on eBay and had bushings for a Harley. Simply wrestled out the SAE bushings and replaced them with 10mm and perfect fit. A spare stator is out being rewound and will hopefully solve the no start issue. I'm probably going to swap out the swingarm for an actual XT if the brake arm doesn't fit on this modified SR one, we'll see. Not liking the big (I think they're Lucas replicas?) turn signals and have a set of Daytonas on the way, as well as a pan for remounting all the electrical stuff under the seat. The K&N I know is huge, it's a reverse conical, that fills the space well though. Doesn't leave so much open dead space under the seat. I also made some custom Yamaha logo vinyl decals that are a cross between the old tuning fork logo, and the new look. A hybrid for merging old and new. I really can't wait to get this sucker running. My patience is running thin on this guy, so he's currently known as "El Bastardo". A better view on the logo decals. See you around the garage... Gary Hopwheels

That's some bike you built there, Gary, some neat details.

"My patience is running thin on this guy, so he's currently known as "El Bastardo"."
LOL! ;D
Most times these bikes have a mind of their own! Very clean machine. Nice choices in bolt ons. It's gotta work great once you light it up. Looking forward to an update when you get the stator back. Nice exhaust. What did you end up using for a header pipe. I remember you mentioning it some time ago but I forget the details. I want to build an exhaust like that in preparation for my next project.

Thanks guys. Hey G Man, that's a White Brothers 1 3/4" head pipe. Some guy was selling them on eBay last year, one right after the other, NOS. Then he abruptly stopped, must have run out. Felt lucky to get one. It was one of those things that I saw about 6 or 8 auctions for them and thought they'd be available forever. Glad I jumped at it, 'cause I havent seen any more. There's a German seller on eBay (biebo) that has a similar pipe, a smoother sweep back, instead of angular. Nice looking also. Gary Hopwheels

Hi Gary, Very nice...good detail work as well. Light looking stylish machine. Are they old style Honda mirrors? One small thing (...that of course you may have already checked)...the horn is fairly low over the guard...past experience (bitter) tells me that it'll hit and dent the top of the guard on full travel and mess up your nice work...don't let anything protrude much below the lower triple-clamp is my advice. Plus you might find it may look better hidden up behind the headlight a bit...personal opinion of course... The Daytona indicators are quite nice as well...I have one style on my road bike...somewhere in the pics...they wire straight up...I used the earth wires of the originals as well. Also on mine I had to make a front bracket to attach them to the lower triple-clamp bolts...the rear went in as standard. SR

Hey Stew: Thanks! Good eye! The horn is currently only hanging by its wires, as I haven't reattached it after removing it fomr some unknown reason at some point recently It tucks up and out of the way when not hanging fomr its electrical entrails ;D They are indeed old Honda mirrors, but I may switch out to bar end style. These work great for actually seeing what's behind though lol! Gary Hopwheels

Hi, Yes I have evidence of the low horn situation on a guard here...if those mirrors are in great condition and you want to unload them let me know. I am going to restore a 350 Honda road bike in a while...I have a few old Hondas... SR

Nice work, hopwheels! I wish my bike can look that good sometime! In an attempt to emulate your hard work, can I ask you a coupla questions?!... (1) What sorta throttle is that you've got up there on the bars? (2) And what sorta front brake cylinder is that, with twin brakes lines coming out of it? Rgdz CL

Where did the fork brace come from?
It looks like the Racer's World of Redwood City unit that I had on my '79 back in '79.
The bike looks very nice.

Your bike's gonna really haul, hopwheels! 38mm in, and that looks like a pretty chunky header - looks like that might be 38mm too. Superb! Should make the SR breathe rather well!

Yep, a White Brothers 1 3/4" head pipe. And yes that fork brace is MikesXS once again. That site has a buch of cool stuff and it crosses over nicely to the SR. The motor has an 11:1 JE piston and an Web Cam cam, so I hope it hauls... wondering if the 91 octane won't cut it and I'll have to track down higher grade fuel? Gary Hopwheels
