I was riding with a friend a few weeks ago, and at the ligth before teh freeway entrance I said, "My bike can only do 75-80." So, I led us onto the freeway and just gassed it. He's on a 2006 gsxr750. When we get off miles down the road he said, "75-80 my a$$!! You were pulling 90 the whole way!" I was surprised.
How about other people top speeds? As far as mods go, I only have a carb, k&n, and a pipe- to my knowledge.

Sounds about right my bike has the same sort of mods running stock gearing and will pull 155kmh on the open road. This was checked against a late model bike with digital speedometer.

I reckon mine is good for just on 90 mph, checked with a GPS unit on a straight road. No hills or head winds. These seem to really hurt the bike. Seems like SR's all have slow speedos. Mick

my friend thinks i'm crazy to do anything over 60mph on my '78. he said this after we cruised up the 101highway in socal doing 80mph. i've had it to 90mph a couple of times. and by a couple i mean every other time i take it out.

my 1980 will do 85mph at 6000rpm or once in a blue moon if the weather is right she can push 90mph at just over 6000rpm.
shes completely stock though, no air filter/exhaust mods etc at all!!
im getting a screen for her this weekend though cos its rather blowy lol!!

My 79 SR will pull 90mph and it's only got carb, exhaust, and air filter changes. Maybe 91mph with the wind at my back.

My SR400 can pull 120 all day long and has been to 130kph with the wind right, slightly downhill and with the planets in perfect alignment.

stew... you are one crazy man!
I'm looking at a little under 90 in 4th gear, indicated, I have yet to check with a fancy bike. do most people get their top speed in 4th or 5th? My main gets all boggy in 5th right now with the throttle slammed open, so 4th's my best top speed bet.

5th gear bro. 4th gear takes me to about 70mph at 5500rpm then i change.

Heh, heh...with the gearing on my black CR (17/38)...the bike pulls top speed in 5th at 6,500...then it hits a 'wall' and won't rev any higher. Not enough power to pull to the redline in top. I'm not compalining mind you. I am hoping that my new one will at least pull the extra revs and more to reach over 200kmh. However, as I have said, it remains to be seen. There's certainly enough work on the engine to make a significant difference over the black bike, but you can tune them to a standstill. So I live in hope. SR

Back in the days of my youth, the early 80's, when I first hotted up my original SR (which is now the orange cafe racer that lives in the shed), I did a top speed run and ran the speedo off the dial, with the tacho showing over 7500rpm.
Now the engine was rather hot, (it was being run on methanol at the time and getting less than 10mpg), the gearing was 16/38, the road was a long gentle downhill straight, I weighed about 30kg less than I do now and the bike was fitted with the same 1/2 race faring that it still wears today. Anyway, according to a formula on a Renolds Gearing Calculator that I had at the time, the bike was in theory doing 134mph! (216kph). Now I have always taken this speed with a with a bit of scepticism, but I can remember that it was both exilerating and frightening at the time, expecially when I found, after stopping, that most of the engine oil had been blown out of the crankcase breather tube all over the rear wheel.
I have never tried another topspeed run since then, but the same engine, slightly detuned (to run on unleaded fuel) is being used in the racer I am building, so I hope to get a chance to find out how fast it will go later in the year, and you can be assured that if it gets to a desent speed I will let you know.

Mine looks fast. but its standing still.....
I only have it out for a quick run of my "test lap" around the neighbourhood, so there's not a lot of room to do any more than 80km.

I'll let you know my top end as soon as this light changes, and the cars stopped in the intersection move, and I get past the construction zone up ahead, and the highway clears out a bit after rush hour. And it stops raining.
