Hi Sjef, Ah yes, won't work with my '76 engine system. On the DCM there's no battery and a TT flywheel magneto... Interesting still... On another note I have the 'Vapor' digital instrument now with the optional dash surround. Nice little unit and it seems to be pretty robust. Won't be fitting it for some time yet though, the New CR moves along slowly. I'll write up a detailed fitment procedure when I do fit it though... SR

In case anyones interested in less technical stuff........... Fitted new points on weekend. Took my time, so I could show my fourteen year old the finer points of setting the gap and static timing the igntion. Got it where I thought it was right, and the bike fired first kick. Check with timing light showed the timing to be almost spot on. Bike now fires first kick hot or cold. No visible arcing at the points when running, so I'm calling the condensor OK. My mechanic mate came around for a BBQ on Sat. night. After demolishing a couple kilos of lamb chops and sausages, the conversation fell to the relative merits of pints versus electronic ignition. he said, "'88 petrol patrols and mavericks still have points. This is because the market research showed that Aussie buyers wanted something they could fix themselves in the bush. So Ford and Nissan gave them what they asked for - something they can clean and adjust themselves every 5000. Of course they could have had an electronic ignition that never needs adjustment the whole life of the vehicle and breaks down so rarely that the dealers don't bother carrying replacement units, but the cutomer is always right." I note what you say about the flywheel magneto Stew. My '81 XT is the same. l'd dearly love to have CDI, but it looks like I'd first have to convert the system to 12V. Seems like European and American bikes got the 12V system at about the E model, going from a manual I was able to borrow on the weekend. Mick

Yes, some of the pics I've seen seem to show that the XT's eventually got the SR engine...in black. Points are OK anyway. The XTs don't rev high enough to need much else I reckon, although the CDI spark is often a lot better. I used to like the XT points for the same reason as the car guys...always good to know that you can fix most things in the bush. SR
